FBW: i hid my body for a different reason by nic at my bottle’s up

i’m gonna go out on a limb here and just say that i like my body.

there. i said it.

are you still reading?

well, if you are, thanks. if you’re not… sorry?

anyway, i do. i like my body. i’m content with my body. i don’t weigh myself. we don’t even have a scale in our house. just never bought one. didn’t care enough to buy one, i suppose.

my clothes fit me. if there are those few pounds that creep up because i’ve indulged recently and start to see that my jeans feel tight, i’ll cut back on the crap eating that i so love to do.

there was a time, 10 years ago, when i did not like my body. but my reason for not liking my body was not due to weight. it was a different kind of body image struggle that i was going through. nevertheless, it was a total mind fuck.

i hated my body 10 years ago because i had been raped and my own skin repulsed me. so i spent time wearing extra baggy clothes, not even considering a bathing suit in the summer, and covering myself up as much as my body temperature would allow me to. i hid my body… from others and from myself.

but, that’s my past. a part of my past. and as this weekend approaches, i will remember that 10 years ago on september 26th, something was taken from me that i will never get back.

i will also remember that i have so much more.

and i won’t hide.

i will celebrate.

Nic, our Ms. April, blogs at My Bottle’s Up, which is a parenting blog, humor blog, and rape advocacy & awareness blog.  Nic’s goal in being a part of the Blogger Body Calendar is to not only honor the goal of April being Sexual Assault Awareness Month, but to also pay homage to those survivors of rape and sexual violence by celebrating her own body.

  • Respect.

  • Love it. I’m happy you’ve taken back your power. There aren’t enough blogs or other written words about liking one’s body. Thank you for throwing off the balance a bit here.

  • @Kensington thank you. that means a lot. i was a little worried about “throwing off the balance.” :)

  • Oh, nooooo, that balance needs throwing off! I mean I certainly understand why there are a million blog entries about food, eating and body issues. We’re a society obsessed with it. What helps is when someone writes something like you did. A little revolution of sorts. Good for the people! :p

  • As always, I admire your writing, your strength, your honesty. And? I love you. That is all.

About BBC2012

This year’s theme is: Survivor and Strength.

To me, above all, women are survivors. They survive domestic abuse, physical, sexual, and mental abuse, and the abuse we sometimes do to ourselves (eating disorders, cutting, etc.). Women survive, and do so beautifully.

This year our participants will show off that survivor strength, not because they are all survivors, but because they all are supporters of every woman who has had to struggle against the violence. All proceeds will go Violence UnSilenced.
