Boobalas: Art By Darryle Pollack
In my post I shared my story about the day I promised my body in the mirror that I would treasure it. And it’s pretty ironic since I now spend so much time around mirrors. When I had cancer, the only way I could escape from the stress—and forget—was by creating art. I had been a writer—but never artistic or crafty. Suddenly, once I discovered art’s power to help me heal, creativity exploded from someplace deep in my soul. And it’s never stopped.
As someone who loves words, I often include them in my art.
Reflecting on my own story, I started making mirrors with the words: You’re Perfect. That’s how I feel now, and how I wish everyone could feel when she looks at herself in a mirror.
Years ago my husband suggested I incorporate bodies and breasts into my art, since they were so integral to my story. It never happened— until now, when I decided to think outside the bra and put a little “zest in the breast.”
Boobalas are playful, but they can also be serious. I’m planning to collaborate with non-profits and charities using Boobalas to share my story and what I’ve learned—with 50% of all profits donated to cancer causes.
So in a way, Boobalas bring my cancer journey full circle.
Using humor and a new take on body image allows me to share my message. I’m hoping other women and girls will learn that our bodies and breasts don’t define who we are— and hoping they will appreciate them as the priceless gift they are.
Darryle Pollack is a former television journalist and writer who discovered her artistic side as a way to cope with the stress of cancer. Her story comes full circle with her new collection called Boobalas—wtih 50% of profits going to cancer causes. A cancer activist and mother of two, Darryle calls her blog I never signed up for this; and outed herself and her missing breasts with her first blog for the Huffington Post, Burning Bras with Keira Knightley.
